Free Throw

The St Alphonsus Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring its 6th Annual Free Throw Competition on Sunday, February 27, 2022 in the St Alphonsus Gym (in the Athenaeum building basement) starting at 1:00pm.  This is the local level of competition for the Statewide Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship.

Registration is open to all area boys and girls ages 9 to 14; no Parish or Alphonsus Academy affiliation is required.  Please join us in bringing more family and youth friendly events to our Parish and community.

BONUS: Winners in each age group for both girls and boys will receive an official Knights of Columbus basketball and advance to the district competition in February

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE
1:00 pm – 9 year old girls
1:15 pm- 9 year old boys
1:30 pm – 10 year old girls
1:45 pm – 10 year old boys
2:00 pm – 11 year old girls
2:15 pm – 11 year old boys
2:30 pm – 12 year old girls
2:45 pm – 12 year old boys
3:00 pm- 13 year old girls
3:15 pm – 13 year old boys
3:30 pm – 14 year old girls
3:45 pm – 14 year old boys

COMPETITION FORMAT:
Each contestant receives three warm-up tosses followed by 15 consecutive Free Throw attempts from the appropriate age-designated foul line. To break a tie, contestants take a second round of five free throws. No warm-up tosses are permitted for the tie-breaker rounds. Successive rounds of five free throws each continue until a winner emerges.

RULES:

  • All children must be pre-registered in order to compete.
  • ONLY GYM SHOES are allowed in the gym, no marking shoes are permitted.
  • VIRTUS trained adults will be on staff to run the event
  • No food or drink allowed on basketball court.

HISTORY:
The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district and state competitions. All boys and girls 9 to 14 years old are eligible to participate and will compete in their respective age divisions. Last year more than 120,000 sharpshooters participated in over 3,600 local competitions.

The Knights of Columbus is an international Catholic family fraternal service organization with 1.9 million members in over 17,000 local councils. Last year, Knights donated over 70 million volunteer hours and $170 million to charitable and benevolent causes, sponsoring projects to benefit their church, councils, communities, culture of life, families and youth.
